Having medical power of attorney can offer individuals peace of mind related to future medical issues that could arise. Power of attorney grants decision-making powers to an appointed person. If someone gives another person medical power of attorney, their medical treatments and welfare can then be decided and looked after by that person should the need arise.
Medical power of attorney involves appointing someone to pursue medical treatment for you should you become unable to express your wishes yourself. This usually arises in cases of being rendered unconscious by going into a coma or becoming otherwise mentally impaired or incapacitated. Some medical power of attorney forms allow preferred medical treatments to be selected and documented ahead of time as well. Power of attorney forms should be filled out as explicitly as possible, signed and notarized.
This updated document should then be witnessed and notarized. A copy of the signed, notarized document should be given to the person who was previously the agent, and copies of the original POA form should be returned to the issuer. The agent has no grounds to resist relinquishing medical power of attorney as long as you are medically and mentally competent enough to make medical decisions on your own.
